Benbulben, known as Sligo's table mountain overlooks Sligo bay with commanding views across Donegal bay to Slieve League and the highest sea cliffs in Ireland. If the visibility is good we will see Croagh Patrick in the distance.
There will be opportunity to learn about the unique flora that grows high up in the north facing gullys. Plants like Tea Leafed Willow and Fringed Sandwort have been proven to have pre dated the ice age. Also we should see evidence of Roseroot, a lovely alpine type plant which traditionally has been used for medicinal purposes, and grows naturally in the Arctic regions of Europe.
At the nose of Benbulben we will look down over Drumcliffe, the resting place of Sligo's famous poet WB Yeats.
Our return route will take us high up over the North Face gullies where you can sense the enormity of the effects of glacial movement during the last ice age.
Meet at Drumcliffe large coach and car park at 9:30am
We will then drive a short distance to the starting point at Lukes Bridge.
The hike will take 4 to 5 hours to complete at a gentle pace.
Difficulty level: Moderate. Well within the reach of good regular walkers.
Distance: 10kms
Height Gained: 400m
