Difficulty level. HARD. (Previous hiking experience is essential)

Welcome to the 12 Bens in Connemara - "The Mweelin Horseshoe"

This hike is designed to introduce people to the magnificant 12 Bens mountain range. During the course of the hike we will visit three summits. Benbaun 477m, Benbrack 582m, and Knocknabrack 442m.

We commence our day at Kylemore and close to the start of the climb we will visit a lime kiln and an unmarked childrens grave plot. The climb up Benbaun is steep but the views back down over Kylemore lake more than make up for it. Soon the magnitude of the massive peaks of the Bens come into view. We will enjoy looking at them today and whet our appetites for another adventure.

We continue our hike to the rocky quartzite summit of Benbrack. This is very typical of the other peaks in the 12 Bens. There is a small lake close to the summit. After this we progress down along the ridge to Knockbrack before descending to the valley under the shadow of Diamond Hill. We then walk out past the old Kylemore Farm to our cars back at Kylemore Abbey car park.
