The Mourne Mountains are situated in Co Down near the beautiful seaside village of Newcastle. They were the inspiration for the song written many years ago by Percy French (1896) with the famous lyrics "Where the mountains of Mourne sweep down to the sea"
The highest summit in the Mourne Mountains is Slieve Donard 853m. It is also the highest peak in Ulster.
The Mournes are highly recommended for their outstanding beauty, stunning scenery, reservoirs and the famous Mourne Wall which took 18 years to build and was completed in 1922. It is 22 miles (35.5km) in length and connects the summits of no less than 15 mountains in the Mournes, including Slieve Donard.
The hiking itinerary for the weekend is as follows:
Saturday - "The heart of the Mournes hike" which encompasses three summits and forms a heart shaped route through stunning mountainous landscape.
Meet at Meelmore Lodge at 9:30am
We will start our hike by climbing upward to Slieve Meelbeg 702m., "Mountain of the ants". Our next summit will be Slieve Meelmore 687m and finally our last summit of the day will be Slieve Bearnagh 739m. We will descend to the Hares Gap with its famous Brandy Pad and from there make our way back to Meelmore Lodge.
* Difficulty level: HARD (Suitable only to those who are currently regular hikers and possess a good level of fitness)

Difficulty level: Demanding. (suitable for most regular fit hikers)

Equipment required:
Good waterproof boots and waterproof clothing are essential; hiking trousers are advised, (no jeans please); spare warm layer; hat and gloves; lunch and/or snacks; water or juice drink, (1.5 litres); small rucksack to carry it all in.
Walking poles are advisable and will provide additional support
