The Poisoned Glen & Slieve Snaght - A guided hike in the Derryveagh Mountains

This hike in the Derryveagh Mountains starts close to the village of Dunlewy under the shadow of Mount Errigal. The terrain can be extremely wet especially after a prolonged spell of rain. However the rewards more than outweigh it. As you walk the glen surrounded by lofty cliffs it is an experience your unlikely to forget.

The Route

We commence our hike at the famous stone bridge which was built at the entry to the then Guiness estate. The route takes us up the Poisoned Glen keeping left of the river to reach a "notch"in the ridge and climb what appears in the distance, an impassable gully.

It would be unusual not to catch sight of Red Deer and if we are very lucky the Golden Eagle which have been re introduced into the nearby Glenveagh National Park.

Once up on top of the ridge we continue our route passing a number of small lakes to finally ascend the lofty summit of Slieve Snaght 678m.

NB Please note this hike is classed as difficult.
